Ontario Investing Over $3.5 Million to Expand Surgeries and Diagnostic Imaging at Peterborough Regional Health Centre
May 15, 2026
Peterborough — The Ontario government is continuing to take action to reduce wait times and improve access to care by investing in expanded surgical services and diagnostic imaging capacity across the province.
As part of this commitment, Peterborough Regional Health Centre has received more than $3.5 million in combined provincial funding to support additional surgeries and increase access to critical diagnostic services.
The largest portion of this investment is through Incremental Surgical Recovery Funding, which helps hospitals complete more procedures, address surgical backlogs, and ensure patients receive timely care. In the Peterborough region:
- Peterborough Regional Health Centre has received $2,680,700 to support increased surgical volumes
This funding enables the hospital to perform more procedures across a wide range of specialties, including orthopedic surgeries such as hip and knee replacements, gynecologic surgeries, cataract procedures, hernia repairs, and pediatric surgeries.
In addition, the province is investing up to $81 million in one-time funding to support approximately 324,000 additional Computed Tomography (CT) scan hours at 86 hospitals across Ontario in 2025–2026. This investment will help reduce diagnostic imaging wait times and improve access to timely diagnoses.
As part of this initiative:
- Peterborough Regional Health Centre has received $879,750 to support additional CT scan hours
Together, these targeted investments help to ensure that patients in the Peterborough region can access faster diagnoses and receive the surgeries they need sooner, improving health outcomes and reducing pressure on the health care system.
“By providing more than $3.5 million to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, we are making it easier and faster for people in our community to connect to the care they need,” said Dave Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha. “This funding is a vital step in reducing wait times for surgeries and diagnostic imaging, ensuring our local healthcare system has the resources to support patients more effectively. Our government will continue to invest in the frontline services that make a real difference for families right here at home.” MPP Smith added.
“On behalf of our Board of Directors, leadership, healthcare professionals and staff at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, I would like to thank MPP Smith and the Ministry of Health for this investment into care closer to home for people in the Peterborough community and across the region,” said Dr. Lynn Mikula, President & CEO at PRHC. “This one-time funding provides patients with faster access to surgeries and improved outcomes – especially for high-demand procedures like orthopedics, cancer, and cataracts. Our CT scan volumes at PRHC have also doubled over the last 10 years. Targeted investments in these areas are critical to meeting the growing needs of the 600,000 patients we serve across a broad urban and rural geography,” added Dr. Mikula.
This funding is part of Ontario’s broader plan to build a stronger, more connected health care system—one that is focused on delivering timely, convenient, and high-quality care for patients across the province.
