NEWS January 26, 2025
Peterborough — The Ontario government is investing $3,750,000 in critical infrastructure to facilitate the construction of up to 4,956 new homes in the City of Peterborough. The funding is being delivered through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, which includes $400 million to help build, repair and maintain municipal roads, bridges and culverts that will promote housing growth in communities across Ontario.
“This significant investment marks an important step forward in addressing the housing needs of our growing community. By supporting the creation of vital infrastructure, our government is not only allowing the City of Peterborough to welcome new homes but also fostering long-term, sustainable development,” said Dave Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha. “Our government is committed to ensuring that communities receive the new investments necessary to flourish, generate jobs, and create opportunities.” Added MPP Smith.
The City of Peterborough will use the funding to upgrade the Towerhill Road/Fairbairn St. area. This project will unlock more housing opportunities and support economic growth in Peterborough.
“This funding through the Housing Enabling Core Services Fund will be used to support key road infrastructure improvements that will lead to more homes being built in Peterborough,” said Jeff Leal, Mayor, City of Peterborough. “I want to thank MPP Smith and the Government of Ontario for investing in our community’s critical infrastructure.” Added Mayor Leal
“To keep pace with growing communities across our province, our government is helping municipalities build more homes faster than ever before,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “Families and residents need safe and reliable roads and bridges to access these homes and travel safely to and from their destinations. That’s why we are making targeted, local investments through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream to support the construction of municipal roads, bridges and culverts that keep residents safe and foster stronger, more connected communities across Ontario.”
The government is also investing $175 million to launch the Health and Safety Water Stream[CC(1] under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program. This new stream will support projects that will protect homes and create resilient communities by building, rehabilitating and expanding aging water, wastewater, stormwater, flood and erosion infrastructure.
Through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program and the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, Ontario is providing nearly $2 billion to support housing- and community-enabling infrastructure and build more homes across the province.
