Havelock — The Ontario government is investing $8,050,017 in water infrastructure to help build approximately 1,584 new homes in the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen (HBM) The funding is being delivered through the province’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF), a stream of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP).

“This investment of over $8 million in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen is fantastic news for our community,” said Dave Smith, MPP for Peterborough—Kawartha. “By supporting the reconstruction of County Road 48, we are not only enabling the creation of up to 1,584 new homes, but we’re also making a real difference in the lives of our residents by improving critical infrastructure and fostering economic growth right here at home.”

The reconstruction of County Road 48 (George St.) in Havelock is a joint project between the County of Peterborough and the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen. The work, which is being carried out in phases, includes replacing buried infrastructure such as storm sewers, sanitary sewers, and watermains, as well as replacing concrete sidewalks and the asphalt road surface. This infrastructure upgrade is necessary to support the planned housing developments in the area.

“The completion of County Road 48 known as George Street in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen is a very exciting project and long overdue here in HBM,” said Jim Martin, Mayor of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen.  “By partnering with the County of Peterborough this project will now be completed after many years of planning and anticipation.  I would like to thank the Province of Ontario and MPP Smith for supporting this very important project.” Add Mayor Martin

“Peterborough County thanks the Government of Ontario for its investment in critical housing-enabling infrastructure in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program,” said Bonnie Clark, Warden, Peterborough County. “This project will benefit current residents and businesses, and enable healthy growth in the township. I appreciate the strong cooperation between the Province, County, and Township exemplified by this initiative.” Added Warden Clark.

The MHIP is part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario and includes historic investments in housing- and community-enabling infrastructure that will help municipalities deliver the core infrastructure needed, such as roads and water systems, to lay the foundation for new homes in communities across the province.

“In the face of economic uncertainty, our government is investing in the future for the people of Ontario by doubling down on our plan to build,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “With our additional investments in the MHIP, we’re unlocking more housing and building critical infrastructure that will protect communities, keep workers on the job and lay the groundwork for a stronger economy.”

This round of funding brings the total number of homes enabled in Ontario through the MHIP to about 800,000. Investing in local infrastructure is part of the province’s more than $200 billion capital plan to build and improve transit, highways, hospitals, schools and other critical public infrastructure, while strengthening the economy for the future.
